The caption is the sitter's own hand, reproduced on the plate:
FRANCIS COMPARET. (DECEASED.) / DENNIS O’BRIEN Street Commissioner. FT. WAYNE. / H. C. McDowell, M.D. ARCOLA, IND.
Two of the five are named only by their engraved signatures, George Humphry and James H. Harper. Comparet is the trader whose house the Sentinel used in 1843 to say where Harmar’s ford was.
